Alabama’s Claycomb, Ponder Tee Off 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals Monday​

Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder will compete as individuals at the NCAA Bryan Regional, May 16-18

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama golfers Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder will tee off the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals Monday morning. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played on the Traditions Club golf course in Bryan, Texas.

The Crimson Tide duo, who earned the No. 1 and No. 2 individual seeds in the regional, will be the final groups to tee off Monday morning with Ponder going off No. 1 at 9:53 a.m. CT and Claycomb following at 10:04 a.m.



The top individual not on an advancing team will qualify to compete at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships which will be played May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

CANON CLAYCOMB BIO​

• Ranked 71st in the nation, according to Golfweek.com’s individual rankings
• Was in the starting lineup for all nine of the Crimson Tide events on the season
• Leads the team in scoring average (70.92) and average vs. par (-0.21), as well as rounds of par or better (15) and rounds in the 60s (9)
• Captured his first collegiate medalist honors at the spring season-opening Watersound Invitational with a 54-hole total of 14-under par 202
• Opened the spring season with six consecutive rounds in the 60s – the longest stretch of his career and most since Justin Thomas had five straight in Spring of 2012

THOMAS PONDER BIO​

• Ranked 106th in the nation, according to Golfweek.com’s individual rankings
• Leads Alabama with five top-20 finishes and two top-10 results across the eight stroke-play events on the year, including a season-best fifth-place result at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup
• Ranks second for UA in stroke average (71.38), average vs. par (+0.25), rounds in the 60s (8) and rounds of par or better (11)
• Tied for the team lead in rounds counted at 91.7 percent (22 of his 24 total rounds counted toward the team total)
• The Tide’s top finisher in four of the team’s eight stroke-play events to lead Alabama

Both Crimson Tide golfers among top 35 individuals after day one

BRYAN, Texas – Alabama juniors Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder teed off the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Bryan Regional Monday.

Claycomb finished the day with an even par 72 to place him in a tie for 26th overall, while Ponder was a shot back at 1-over 73 to end the day in a tie for 34th position.

The top individual not on an advancing team from the regional will qualify to compete at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships which will be played May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

CANON CLAYCOMB ROUND ONE HIGHLIGHTS​

• After three pars to begin the day, Claycomb sunk his first of four birdie putts on the 387-yard par 4 fourth hole to drop to 1-under through four
• Claycomb recorded three pars, a double bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 9 to finish the front nine at 2-over par
• Birdies across three of his first seven holes on the back nine dropped him to 1-under for the day with two holes remaining
• He finished the round with a bogey to result in the even-par afternoon

THOMAS PONDER ROUND ONE HIGHLIGHTS​

• Ponder finished with eight pars on the front nine with the only blemish coming via a double bogey on No. 4 to result in a 2-over score at the turn
• His first birdie came on the par 4 12th hole to fall to 1-over on the day
• After a bogey on No. 14, Ponder collected a second birdie across four holes with a birdie on No. 15
• He went on to par the final three holes which resulted in the 1-over 73
