Alabama Volleyball Dominant in Saturday Road Sweep at South Carolina

The Crimson Tide hit a blistering .385 in the match

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Alabama volleyball turned in its finest performance of the 2021 season Saturday afternoon, sweeping South Carolina on the road by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22.

It is Alabama’s (10-10, 2-6 SEC) first win over South Carolina (11-8, 3-6 SEC) since 2017, snapping a five-match winning streak in the series for the Gamecocks. The Crimson Tide’s last road win over South Carolina was in 2016, which was also its last sweep over the Gamecocks.

The Alabama offense posted a dominant .385 hitting percentage, with Kennedy Muckelroy (.469), Kendyl Reaugh (.385) and Abby Marjama (.316) each finishing above .300. Muckelroy led the offense with a career-best 19 kills, marking her fourth-straight match in double figures. Brooke Slusser finished the match with 36 assists and 11 digs, marking her second double-double of the season.

Alabama owned the early momentum in the opening set, with a 7-2 run pushing the Tide ahead 11-5 at South Carolina’s first timeout. Alabama jumped ahead by as much as eight points before the Gamecocks clawed back within four, forcing a Tide timeout at 18-14. That would be as close as the score would get, with Alabama holding on to win 25-19.

After six tie scores early in set two, a Tide attack error tied it for a seventh time at 9-9 but Alabama then surged ahead, leading 17-12 after a Kendyl Reaugh service ace as South Carolina called a timeout. The Tide reached set point at 24-19 but the Gamecocks held tough, scoring three unanswered before an Alabama kill ended the frame, 25-22.

With the Tide leading 11-10 in set three, a 6-2 run improved the lead to 17-12 at South Carolina’s first timeout. The Gamecocks fought back within two, forcing Alabama to spend one of its timeouts at 19-17. South Carolina brought it as close as one point at 22-21 but a 3-1 run closed it out for the Tide to win, 25-22, and complete the sweep.
