Alabama Men’s Tennis Opens 2022 At Home with Saturday Double Header

The Crimson Tide will host Mercer and Samford at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility in the team’s first dual matches of the season

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– The Alabama men’s tennis team opens the dual-match season Saturday, hosting Mercer and Samford at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide will face the Bears at 1 p.m. CT before battling the Bulldogs at 6 p.m. CT.

Admission to all Alabama tennis matches is free. Masks are strongly encouraged.

    Looking Back at the Fall

    • Juan Martin and Filip Planinsek put together an impressive fall season, earning an automatic berth to the ITA National Fall Championships after winning the doubles draw at the ITA Southern Regional in Auburn, Ala.
    • Martin and Planinsek won back-to-back matches on the final day of the ITA Southern Regionals, going 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2, 7-6 (4), respectively, in the semifinals and finals
    • At the team’s home tournament, the Alabama Four-In-The-Fall, Planinsek, Joao Ferreira and Enzo Aguiard went undefeated in singles play, while Patrick Kaukovalta and German Samofalov went undefeated in doubles play
    • Martin led the Tide at the MSU Bulldog Invitational, recording a pair of singles wins before posting two doubles victories
    • Ferreira paced UA in its final tournament of 2021 with two singles wins and a doubles victory with partner Aguiard at the UCF Invitational

      A Look at the Tide

      • Alabama welcomed six new faces to the program including transfers Juan Martin from TCU and Joao Ferreira from Lynn along with freshmen Enzo Aguiard, Zach Foster, Filip Planinsek and German Samofalov
      • Patrick Kaukovalta and Rudi Christiansen return to the program after helping UA make its 20th NCAA Tournament team appearance and fourth under head coach George Husack last season
      • The NCAA berth was the third in a row for the Tide, after advancing in 2018 and 2019 (there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020 due to the CoVID 19 pandemic)
      • Planinsek and Martin enter the spring season as the No. 16 doubles pair according to the latest ITA rankings
      • Planinsek is ranked 83rd in singles, while the doubles pair of Aguiard and Planinsek is ranked 52nd

      Scouting the Competition

      • Alabama hosts Mercer and Samford Saturday as the Tide kicks off the dual-match season
      • It is the second consecutive season Alabama has opened the spring against Samford as the two teams have gone head-to-head for three straight years
      • Alabama holds a 38-10 record against the Bulldogs after sweeping the double-header matchup last season 6-1 and 5-2, respectively
      • This is only the second meeting between UA and Mercer with Alabama recording a 5-1 victory in the lone meeting on March 22, 2015
      • Mercer put together an 11-14 overall record last season, while Samford finished the year 13-8
      • Both teams advanced to the Southern Conference semifinals last year
