Alabama Cross Country Travels to Huntsville for North Alabama Showcase

The Crimson Tide is making the first of two trips to Huntsville this fall

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama men’s and women’s cross country squads will race at the North Alabama Showcase at the John Hunt Cross Country Running Park in Huntsville, Ala., Friday morning. It marks the first of two trips to Huntsville for the Crimson Tide, with the second coming in November when UA returns for the NCAA South Region Championships.

The men will compete over an 8-kilometer course starting at 7:30 a.m. CT, while the women get things started at 8 a.m. and will race over a 5-kilometer course.

Sophomore Sophie Spada Said

“We’re really looking forward to seeing how our training translates to our races. We’re in a really good spot and we’re definitely stronger than we were last year, so it will be nice to put some times to that training.”

Sophomore Jack Hawes Said

“We’re really excited to get back in action now that we have the full team ready to go. We’ve got some pretty good guys that we’ve added to the team who are going to make a difference and we can’t wait to see what we’ve got out there.”

The field of 23 schools includes five from the Southeastern Conference, including the Tide, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Other schools include Chattanooga, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Alabama, Reinhardt, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Tulane and UAB.

The Alabama women’s line up will include Flomena Asekol, R/iley Schelp, Sophie Spada, Leahrose Mami, Rebecca Billman, Kerri Walsh, Keaton Morrison, Kaylie Crews, Lauren Brackin and Lauren Turner. Asekol is making her Crimson Tide debut, while Spada, Crews and Brackin are rolling out for the first time this season.

For the Tide men, Brady Barton, Carson Burian, Hillary Cheruiyot, Jack Hawes, Eliud Kipsang, Victor Kiprop, Collin Jones, Aubrey Lake, Alex Mielke, Rich Saenz, Scott Platek, Paul Selden, Gavin Saacke and Jacob Wiggers are slated to lace up their cleats on Friday. Burian, Cheruiyot, Kiprop and Lake will make their debut wearing the crimson and white of Alabama. Hawes, Kipsang, Selden, and Wiggers will get their 2021 season started in Huntsville.
